Canon Camera Recall 4
September 13th, 2008 by ComputerBob
Two days ago, I logged on to the Canon web site, to check on the repair progress of my wife’s Canon Powershot A75 digital camera. It told me that her camera’s repairs had just been completed, free of charge, but that it hadn’t been shipped back to me yet.
Yesterday morning, FedEx showed up at my door with my wife’s camera: Just as they had done with my camera a few weeks ago, Canon had shipped it back to us overnight.
So now Canon has stood behind its products and repaired both of our 3 1/2-year-old, out-of-warrantee Canon Powershot A75 cameras without charging us a penny. Canon even paid all of the shipping costs for both cameras, both to and from their repair center.
That’s what I call excellent customer service.

I had the exact same problem happen to my Canon camera as well. I could barely make out what was on the LCD screen, even though the menu choices were crystal clear. Pictures came out very purple where bright white should have been, giving it that “I accidentally opened the film camera door” look. I’m glad that I poked around on the web and found your site.
Interestingly, my repair problem was made more complex by the fact that I had purchased my camera (equivalent of the Powershot S400) in Japan back in the summer of 2003. I wasn’t sure if the recall would cover it, but I called the Canon support number anyway. They told me they wouldn’t cover it, but that it would cost me nothing for them to take a look at it if I shipped it to them. I figured I had nothing to lose besides the 7 dollars or so to ship it insured FedEx, so I sent it and waited.
A few days later, I got an email notice that they were going to repair it anyway. A few days after that, it came back and works normally again. As an added bonus, they also fixed my CF slot door. The catch had broken on it and I was securing it with a piece of tape since the camera won’t power on if the door is open.
All in all, I would have to say that I am exteremely satisfied with Canon’s customer support and service. They were courteous and worked very quickly to repair my camera to full functioning status. I will definitely look to them in the future when I decide to upgrade or replace this one.

Joining the ranks of Canon repaired cameras real soon… with a twist.
1.) I have never purchased a Canon Camera. I have several other brands, but have never owned a Canon until I tripped over one at the dump. Yes, the dump.
2.) Brought said camera home and cleaned it well, inspected it for obvious defects, none found. Installed good batteries and a CF card, powers up but with no image. All other functions appear to work.
3.) Google (my best friend) found me the recall notice about the CCD’s. Ho Ho! A75 included!
4.) Contacted Canon Friday, received the label Monday, sent them the camera Tuesday. They received it Thursday.
5.) Received an e-mail from them that they approved the repair, and that they will return it as soon as they can. Called them up, and asked about the internal battery that maintains the date and time. Mine was appaently dead. The tech. contacted the repair department, and they were just getting ready to reassemble my camera. Perfect timing. They agreed to install the battery free.
I was told that I should have my camera back probably Tuesday or Wednesday. What service!
So… I can’t wait to take my first pictures with my newly refurbished and completely free A75.
I should probably go buy a few powerball tickets…

@joester,
That’s really cool! More proof that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure! It sounds like one Powerball ticket is all you’re going to need.

I WON!!!
..as far as the camera is concerned. PowerBall wasn’t as friendly or rewarding to me.
But I’m not complaining! I am thrilled to report that the camera came to me this afternoon, and works perfectly. I was a bit dissapointed at the packaging the repair center used. The camera was wrapped in a plastic bag with the paperwork, and dropped into a box with a wad of packing paper. No damage from what I could tell, but certainly not as well protected as when I sent it.
4 AA batteries and a CF card slated for the scrap bin (256MB) later, I have a good as new camera! Wait… scratch that, revise to “My wife has a good as new camera!”
