Canon Camera Recall 2

August 14th, 2008 by ComputerBob

Several days ago, I told you about a factory recall of several different models of Canon digital still and video cameras, to fix a manufacturing defect in the cameras’ connections to their internal CCD image sensors.

I had discovered the recall after my camera had suddenly exhibited weird behavior, and I had called Canon to ask them about it. Just as they had promised at the time, that same day, Canon emailed me a shipping label that allowed me to ship my camera back to them via UPS, free of charge, so that they could inspect it.

I tracked that shipment and saw that my camera arrived at the Canon repair center in Illinois this past Friday, August 8.

I expected that it would then take a few days for Canon to get around to inspecting it, and then I’d probably receive an email from them, confirming whether or not it suffered from the CCD-connection problem, and telling me how much it would cost to fix it if it wasn’t covered by the factory recall.

Instead, to my surprise, yesterday afternoon I received a cardboard box from FedEx overnight delivery.

Inside the box was my camera, with a letter from Canon. It said “Thank you for your request on your equipment as listed below. We have examined your equipment for the service you requested. The service on your equipment has been completed. As part of Canon’s commitment to its customers, you can be assured that your equipment has been returned to Factory Specifications. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve you.”

Then it stated that they had confirmed that it had the CCD issue, and that they had repaired it to “good working order” with no charge to me for parts, labor, tax or shipping.

My 3 1/2 year-old, out-of-warranty camera is working like brand new again.

I’m really, really glad that I did a Google search and discovered that Canon factory recall, instead of just throwing out my camera when it stopped working.

    There’s another option — not free — costs $100 -250 — it’s a “trade-up” from slickdeals.net

So the deal is this… you can trade-in/up your old canon camera for a refurbished camera (last year’s model with 6mo warranty) for a predetermined price based on your old camera model. They’ll mail you your new camera with accessories (but no memory card) and you put your old camera in the packaging (you get to keep all the accessories) in the prepaid package. It’s not much but if you have an old broken camera that you no longer want and don’t mind not getting the newest/hottest gadget or a second camera, this is a great deal.

All you have to do is call Canon @1-800-828-4040 and ask for tech support.

Thanks for that other option, Mike. Could you please clarify one thing: if the deal is from slickdeals.net, why do you have to call Canon tech support about it?

slickdeals.net is a bargain shopping site where I saw the information posted — the deal is from Canon
