Can Plants And Parks Boost Immunity?

July 7th, 2010 by ComputerBob

On a huge piece of land that was formerly privately owned, a beautiful new county park/preserve recently opened right next to my neighborhood, with a pedestrian entrance that’s just several door away from our house.

The new park contains several winding walking paths, several lakes, ponds and wetlands, a children’s playground, a doggie park, several picnic shelters, many types of wildlife and lots of lush, peaceful scenery.

Max and I have taken our daily walk in that park every single day since it opened. On cool, overcast days, he walks the entire shorter path with me. On hot, sunny days, I carry him halfway or more, and then he walks the rest of the way with me. Twice, it’s been raining so hard that I’ve had to carry him in one hand and an umbrella in the other. I wear a fanny pack that contains poopy bags, a bottle of water (in case he starts to get too hot), and several copies of a map to the park, which I happily hand out to people who I come across who are lost.

We all know that taking a daily walk is good for our health, but now comes word that doing it in a forest or a park may actually help strengthen our immune systems.
