Best Buy Shenanigans

January 5th, 2010 by ComputerBob

Many years ago, I used to buy PC parts and supplies at my local Best Buy store. Their selection was good and their prices beat every other local store. Their name described their store.

But it’s been a long time since I bought anything at Best Buy because, over the years, they changed. Their once diverse inventory shifted to consist of mainly higher-end, higher-markup merchandise, with a very minimal or even non-existent selection of the moderately-priced items that I want.

Plus, over the years, I’ve read many stories of Best Buy employees using lies and FUD to scare naive customers into paying for extended warranties and other unnecessary goods and services.

It’s been a long, long time since I found a “best buy” at Best Buy.

So, about ten years ago, I pretty much gave up on Best Buy, and since then, I’ve mostly researched what I want online and then bought it through NewEgg.com — or from my local WalMart store, when it has carried what I’ve wanted.

Now an investigation alleges that Best Buy stores are currently using lies and FUD to push expensive and essentially worthless PC “optimization” services — and even refusing to sell non-optimized PCs at their advertised prices.
