Believable Hoaxes

October 19th, 2009 by ComputerBob

As the son of a missionary, my father-in-law grew up in the jungles of Mato Grosso, Brazil.

So he has all kinds of memories and stories about living and playing in that very dangerous part of the world.

Like the time he watched a giant snake swallow an entire calf by the side of a river.

But, listening to him, one gets a strong impression that he really enjoyed living in the jungle, and didn’t really think of it as being a dangerous place.

Except for the headhunters.

There really were tribes of headhunters in those jungles, and if you wanted to stay alive, you had to avoid going anywhere near their camps.

But several of my father-in-law’s stories ended with his brother and him being killed and eaten by the headhunters.

In his late teens, he came back to the U.S., where he went to college and had a long career as a fifth grade teacher.

As you can imagine, his Brazil stories were very popular with his students.

Of course, many of his stories were true. But, as we’ve already seen, many of them were not.

But because he’s a very honest man, whenever he would tell his students one of the latter, he would preface it by saying, “This next story is not true, but you can choose to believe it if you want.”

Invariably, one or more of his students would shout out, “I believe it, Mr. Martin!”

They’re probably some of the same people who also believe these five hoaxes.
