Another Digital Conversion
December 20th, 2008 by ComputerBob
Have you heard? This coming February, television stations will no longer be broadcasting analog television signals. So, if your television set uses an antenna to receive its television signals, you’ll need to buy a digital conversion box for it or you won’t be able to watch TV….
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen and heard that same message over the past several months. Through 30-second public service announcements. And ubiquitous scrolls across the bottom of the screen during my favorite TV shows. And radio ads. And magazine ads. PBS even has a half-hour program where the guys from This Old House explain it all in excruciating detail — it seems like they air that at least once or twice every day.
By now, I think even toddlers can recite the entire digital broadcast signal conversion litany.
But it concerns me that no one is talking about another digital conversion that may affect almost as many people.
I’m talking about digital coffee makers.
I’m sure they contain all the latest whiz-bang coffee-making technologies. And maybe the coffee that they make tastes noticeably richer and smoother than analog coffee.
But I don’t see anyone reminding consumers that their new digital coffee maker will be useless unless they also buy digital coffee, digital coffee filters, and digital coffee cups.
And, as far as I can tell, no one is making digital coffee conversion boxes, either.
Caveat emptor, my friends. Caveat emptor.
