An Open Source Car

June 13th, 2009 by ComputerBob

Regular readers of this Journal know that I’ve been using free-and-open-source Linux full-time instead of Windows since July of 2006.

The term, “open source” means that the underlying code that runs our software is available for us to examine and/or change it to suit our needs.

Many of us who use open source software don’t have the skills, knowledge or motivation needed to understand anything in the source code of the software that we use — let alone modify it in meaningful ways.

Still, the speed, security and software features that we use greatly benefit from the fact that other people can do those things on our behalf.

Now comes the news that a car design company plans to unveil its idea for an open source car later this month.

Its proposed specifications are incredibly impressive.

So are the proposed terms of its lease.

But does it have any chance of actually being built and used?

As usual Slashdot’s readers have a lot to say on the subject.
