An Impersonal Personal Response
September 10th, 2008 by ComputerBob
Many years ago, my mother-in-law got in trouble with several of her friends by saving the Christmas cards that she had received and mailing them back to the original senders the following Christmas, after adding a “same to you” message inside each one. Efficient? Yes. Overflowing with warm wishes and Christmas cheer? Not so much.
Although this web site gets about 4,000 visits each day, surprisingly few of its visitors contact me directly. So responding to those who do is an easily manageable task on most days. On the other hand, I wrote several of the articles in this site’s CB Guides section to answer questions and cover topics that I had grown tired of answering over and over to individuals.
So I can understand that an extremely popular writer like Robert A. Heinlein ended up having to respond to his fan mail with a personalized form letter.
