A Tiny Light At The End Of A Long Tunnel
July 13th, 2008 by ComputerBob
As I’ve mentioned before, I’m currently in the process of changing this entire web site to a fixed-width format. I’m also in the process of moving ComputerBob’s Journal — at least its newest Journal entries — into WordPress.
Those tasks have required me to re-learn the intricacies of this site’s CSS that I first designed about 5 years ago. It has also required me to learn many of the under-the-hood secrets of WordPress, so that I could tweak its code to add, remove and change features to make it look and work the way I want it to on this site. All-in-all, the past several weeks have been sometimes extremely frustrating, but always very educationally “stretching.”
My work continues behind the scenes. Late last night, I reached a point where it made sense to disable the current SMF-forum-based Journal’s “comments” feature, to keep them from being “moving targets” as I transition them into my behind-the-scenes WordPress installation.
As I’ve mentioned here before, I’ve learned from past experience that making two or more simultaneous major changes to this web site can potentially create “domino effects” that would adversely affect other parts of this site, so I’m trying to think everything through and do lots of testing before I make even small changes.
So far, so good.
Also from experience, I find that some days, I just need to walk away from it for a few hours and do something totally unrelated. Then, when I’ve cleared my head and feel like I’ve gotten “a second wind,” I’m able to continue with renewed concentration — and often better ideas for what I’m trying to do.
Stay tuned for more fun.
