A Really Old Joke

November 15th, 2008 by ComputerBob

True comedy afficionados have a special place in their hearts for the Monty Python Dead Parrot Sketch. When that sketch first aired in my town — late at night on PBS around 1970 — it was a seed that sprouted hundreds of jokes by opening the door to what many of us thought was a new type of dry, preposterous humor.

But — as has been said many times before — nothing is truly original. It’s all adapted, borrowed or stolen from someone else’s previous work. In school, we used to say it a little differently: When someone would tell a joke that we recognized, we’ d say, “The first time I heard that joke, I laughed so hard that I fell off of my chariot.”

That’s ironic, given that a classic scholar has proven that the Dead Parrot sketch is 1,600 years old.

There are classic scholars studying comedy? Now that’s funny.
