A Potential New Client Is A Survivor

June 23rd, 2008 by ComputerBob

I spent the morning at the home of a potential new client for my web design services. We looked at his current web site, the sites of several of his competitors and some graphics that he had created to show me how he wants to change his site.

All together, it took almost 3 hours to reach the point where I felt like I fully understand his needs, and the needs of his web site enough to put together a cost estimate for him.

But before I can do that accurately, I’ll have to spend some more time researching the software that I have in mind to use on his site, to see if it will be possible to tweak its underlying code to make it do what he needs it to do.

Anyway, after our meeting, he took me out for lunch at a nearby family restaurant. That’s when our conversation meandered into more personal topics.

I learned that he was struck by lightning last year, while riding his motorcycle at highway speeds. I also learned that, a few years ago, he developed a viral condition that began as a rash but eventually put him into a near-vegetative state. He couldn’t talk. He couldn’t walk. He didn’t recognize his loved ones. He couldn’t even think. In fact, he remembers very little about that whole time, other than what others told him about it afterward.

But through it all, his wife stayed by his side, helping him come back to a normal life as a self-employed mechanical designer. She must really, really love him.

I told him that he is a survivor — and his are exactly the kind of inspirational stories that I’d love for people to share in my Survivors Forums.

That’s when he became sort of bashful. He humbly assured me that everyone has lived through bad things in life, and everyone has a story like his.

Do you have a story like his? Maybe your story isn’t as dramatic as his, but if you’ve lived through something difficult in your past, your story could be exactly what someone else needs to read in order to help them get through a difficult time right now.

Please share your story with us.
