A Bad Photo Opportunity 3

April 24th, 2010 by ComputerBob

After getting my photos from last weekend’s charity fundraiser onto the charity’s Web site yesterday, I worked on publishing my videos of the band that played at that same event.

First I used WinFF in Debian Linux to convert the original .AVI videos to .FLV format.

Then I used phpGraphy’s admin tools to create a new folder on the charity Web site.

After that, I used my FTP program to upload the .FLV videos to the new folder that phpGraphy had created.

When I returned to phpGraphy’s admin screen and refreshed the new folder that it had created, I saw that phpGraphy had automatically added all 12 of my videos to that folder, and had also created a Web page with links to the videos and a streaming video player that would display them.

Clicking on the names of the videos while in admin mode allowed me to not only view them within phpGraphy, but to also rename them to the names of the songs that the band was playing in them.

So now, all of my photos and all of my videos are up on the charity’s Web site, along with a notice that tells people that the photos and videos Web pages don’t have the same look and feel as the rest of the site yet, but at least now everyone can see all of the photos and videos.

In the next few days, I’ll work on editing the phpGraphy theme, to give it the same header, navigation area, footer, and colors as the rest of the charity’s site.

It was pretty quick and easy to get my videos to display in phpGraphy, but the trade-off is that the streaming video player in phpGraphy responds much slower, has a lot fewer features, and doesn’t look as good as the JW Player software that I used to display last year’s videos.

So I haven’t made a final decision on it yet, but I may end up using JW Player instead of phpGraphy to display this year’s videos.

After I get some rest.
