A Bad Photo Opportunity 2

April 23rd, 2010 by ComputerBob

After analyzing about 40 different online gallery software packages, I finally narrowed my choices down to the 5 or 6 that I was willing to use and that I thought would probably meet my needs.

But having already spent several days on this task, I didn’t want to spend even more time carefully comparing all of the finalists’ various pros and cons, so I decided to just go ahead and try to install and use one of them — if it worked, that would be my choice.

The first package that I tried was a Flash-based gallery that looked absolutely awesome, but I was very disappointed to discover that it came with absolutely no documentation at all — not even a README file to explain how to install it — and even the support link on its Web site was broken.

How disappointing, but par for the course, in my experience.

The second package that I tried turned out to be way too complicated to install. I wasn’t willing to invest a couple of hours just to get it up and running before I could see if it met my needs or not.

At that point, I was getting nervous. What if none of my final choices was going to work?

So, as you can imagine, I breathed a huge sigh of relief when the third package that I tried (phpGraphy) installed easily and started working right away. So that’s what I ended up using, even though it has some features (comments, ratings, etc.) that I don’t want or need.

My photos of last Sunday’s charity fundraising event are finally online on the charity Web site. And after I get my videos up on that site, I’ll start to concentrate on editing the phpGraphy config files so that (hopefully) the photo pages will eventually have the exact same look and feel as the rest of the charity Web site. And once that is done, I’ll convert all of the previous years’ photos into phpGraphy galleries.

Whew!
