2009 Readers’ Choice Awards

One of Linux’s many, many advantages over Windows is that nearly every Linux distribution comes with a couple hundred free and open source applications, tools and utilities, with thousands more of them available with just a few clicks.
The downside to that is that it can be confusing to beginning Linux users to face a long “Start” menu that contains several different software choices for every task.
Without spending a lot of time trying out every choice, how can they tell which ones might be the best ones to use?
One way might be to check out The 2009 Linux Journal Readers’ Choice Awards.
If you’re already an experienced Linux user, then you may already use most, if not all, of the award winners.
Or you may have discovered that your own particular needs are better served by using other software that isn’t on the list.
That’s another Linux advantage — freedom of choice.
