Conference on Information Technology, 2001

November 20, 2001

On November 16, 2001, I was honored to be a presenter at the League for Innovation's 2001 National Conference on Information Technology, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. My one-hour presentation was titled, "Using An Instructional Web Site To Build A Sense Of Community."

At the end of my presentation, several attendees thanked me and asked for my business card. A little while later, as I was leaving the building, wearing my black shirt with large white letering that read, "got Bob?," I heard a woman's voice shout, "Bob!" I turned to see a very attractive, young blonde woman who I had never seen before, coming up a nearby escalator, waving at me. As she approached, she asked if it would be OK if her friend, a tall, handsome man, could take a photograph of her with me. Feeling pretty good that one of the thousands of attendees had recognized me from my Web site, I said, "Sure!," but then asked why she wanted to take a picture with me. She pointed at the photographer. "We're from Australia, and he thinks all Americans should be named "Bob."

So, it turned out that my "Bob" shirt had been the only reason she wanted to have her photo taken with me!

I guess I can live with that.
