Domestic violence is an issue of POWER AND CONTROL. One partner abuses the other to gain power and control over their victim. It is a learned behavior that is reinforced by societal attitudes, beliefs, and myths which are perpetuated and reinforced through the family, religion, and the media. Victims are oftentimes embarrassed or even terrified to reveal the truth about their situation. The abuser will often threaten and intimidate the victim to keep quiet about the abuse. IF the victim does decide to reach out for help she (or he) may experience re-victimization by family members, co-workers, the legal system, or law enforcement. The victim is not always believed and/or can even be blamed for the abuse. It is important for any family member or friend to understand that the victim is NEVER responsible for the abuse. NO ONE deserves to be abused. The most important thing you can do for them is to LISTEN TO THEM, BELIEVE THEM, AND SUPPORT THEM as best as you can.
