George Brandenburg

It was another one of their many fights about money.

But it wasn't really about money.

It was about a struggle for power and control between two people.

Two people who had taken a vow to love and honor each other until death.

"Just go in there and tell George Brandenburg that you need a raise! Don't take 'no' for an answer! You need more money!"

"George Brandenburg doesn't care about me! If I tell him I need more money, he'll just fire me and hire someone else!"

Just like they always did, they talked past each other — neither of them realizing that they were both on the same side of the issue.

Her comments became more insulting and belittling.

His behavior became more theatening.

But neither of them could back down.

Until after it was too late.

And the damage had been done.

To all of us.

Again.

Like always, I was there.

Like always, I witnessed the entire incident.

Silently.

I had no choice.

I remember their fights very clearly.

And how they always ended.

And how they never ended.

Memories seared into the pink flesh of my soul.

When George Brandenburg was my father's manager.

In 1964.
