A New Day

by ComputerBob

January 1, 2007

The month of January was named after the Roman god Janus, who had 2 heads — one faced forward and the other faced backward. Like Janus, most of us tend to look both forward and backward at the beginning of each new year. We tally up both our societal and personal "wins and losses," for the previous year, and express our hope that things will be better in the coming year.

As we look forward and back, let's try to "count our blessings," remembering all of the good things that this past year brought us, and recognizing all of the good things that this coming year will bring us. Let's not dwell on the bad things that happened, or that will happen, but instead choose to learn important lessons from them that will strengthen our faith, hope, love, wisdom, and joy. Life's too short to allow ourselves to be weighed down by baggage from the past, whether it takes the form of painful memories or destructive relationships. Drop that baggage right now, and you'll find that it is much easier to move forward without it. There's an old saying that you can't control whatever happens to you in life — you can only control how you react to whatever happens to you. That's my personal goal, and my prayer for you in this new year.
